The Roma Archives of Finland − Finitiko kaalengo arkiivos

The Roma Archives of Finland − Finitiko kaalengo arkiivos is a joint collection of Romani cultural materials held by SKS and the National Archives.

The Roma Archives of Finland − Finitiko kaalengo arkiivos includes folkloristic, oral historical and cultural historical materials as well as archives donated by private individuals and Roma NGOs. The collection consists of manuscripts, recordings, photographs and printed materials. The archive materials will be placed at the SKS archive and the National Archives.

The collections will be accumulated and developed as part of the Cultural Heritage of the Roma people: Archiving, Valuation and Research project (2016–2018). In early 2017, the approximately eight shelf metres of Roma-related materials donated by a total of seven private individuals and Roma NGOs during the project were catalogued. The descriptive metadata will be available on the National Archives Service once the project is completed. The materials are available for use at the SKS archives or the National Archives.

The project is carried out by the National Advisory Board on Romani Affairs, the National Archives of Finland and the Finnish Literature Society. The project has also received funding from the Majaoja Foundation and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

The Cultural Heritage of the Roma people: Archiving, Valuation and Research project is part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Finland’s independence. The project and its outcome, the collections of the Roma Archive of Finland – Finitiko kaalengo arkiivos, are implemented under the National Policy on Roma (ROMPO 2014–2017).

The Cultural Heritage of the Roma people: Archiving, Valuation and Research (2016–2018)

The Cultural Heritage of the Roma people: Archiving, Valuation and Research (2016–2018) is an archiving and research project for collecting Romani oral history and heritage through interviews and photographs as well as archives donated by Roma NGOs and private individuals. The project aims to build contacts with the Romani language and culture research community and promote research into the subject area. Under the project, a number of academic articles on the history of collecting Romani materials will be published, with the aim of popularising the findings through news articles in the mainstream media and blogs. From the point of view of the Roma, the most important result is the cherishing of their own cultural heritage and increasing its appreciation. The outcome of the project is the permanent collections of the Roma Archive of Finland – Finitiko kaalengo arkiivos.
