Archives of the Finnish Literature Society

The Folklore Archives

The Folklore Archives are the central resource for folklore research in Finland, which first became an independent department of the SKS in 1934. The purpose of the archives is primarily to document oral traditions and to provide folklore material and help for researchers, institutions, the media and enthusiasts alike. The archive works in close cooperation with research institutions in Finland and abroad and produces a number of publications in the field. The Joensuu Folklore Archives have been operating within the Folklore Archives since 1981.

The Folklore Archives seek to collect oral tradition, personal narratives and memories in a number of different ways. Nowadays this work is primarily focused on organising collection campaigns across the country. The archives also actively maintain their own respondent network.

The Literary Archives

The Literary Archives of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS) focus on Finnish literature and literary culture as well as the history of the SKS. The purpose of the archives is to gather research sources relating to its specialist fields, to take care of the storing and preservation of its collections, to inform people of the material in its collections and to aid researchers, institutions, the press and others using the archive. It also functions as a research centre and offers students a number of internships.
