Wireless network in the SKS

Customers can access a wireless customer network (WLAN) in the premises of the Ethnological Department of the SKS's library using their own laptop computers or some other wireless device.

The SKS is not responsible for the compatibility of the wireless network with customers' devices. Customers must themselves be responsible for the data security of their own devices. The network must be used in accordance with the law, good practice and the library's user rules.

The temporary password required for accessing the network is available from the information point in the Ethnological Department.

In order to access the network, a computer must have:

  • An integral wireless network card or PCMCIA card with standards 802.11B/G or 802.11A
  • Support for an ASCII 128 bit WEP encryption (802.11B/G) or 256 bit WPA encryption (802.11A)
  • DHCP search set as automatic.

For standard 802.11B/G:

  • channel 11
  • name of the network (SSID) SKSEtno
  • roaming area: the whole of the Ethnological Department.

For standard 802.11a (strong encryption WPA - PSK - AES):

  • channel to be set as automatic
  • name of the network (SSID) SKSEtnoa
  • roaming area: the collection room.

The operability of the network has been tested with the following network cards:

  • Cisco Aironet a/b/g Air-CB21AG-E-K9
  • Buffalo WLI-CB-G54
  • HP's nx9000 series laptops (excluding the nx9005) with an integrated network cards.

Login instructions for basic users (Windows XP, 802.11g):

  • Select Network environment
  • Select Network connections
  • Select Wireless network connection
  • Select Show wireless connections
  • Select the SKSEtno network
  • Network key: enter the password and confirm.

The lower bar in XP may offer a short cut to the wireless network.
