At the foundation of SKS's publishing ethos is a sense of permanence. The Society publishes both timeless classics and books dealing with current affairs, whose value and significance will still be felt in years to come. In addition to publishing research and works of non-fiction in SKS's specialist fields, the Society also publishes textbooks, dictionaries, anthologies, collections of photography, recorded material and children's books. With its series of biographies, volumes of letters and travel literature, SKS sheds light on events and figures of great significance from a cultural historical perspective.
Among the largest of SKS's recent publishing projects have been the Etymological Dictionary of the Finnish Language, Suomen sanojen alkuperä 1-3, a three-volume history of the Finnish literature, a Finnish cultural encyclopedia which has appeared in three languages and a two-volume History of Finland. The first part of the ten-volume Finnish National Biography was published in 2003 and a three-volume history of Finnish agriculture will be published by the end of year 2004. Both the Finnish National Biography and its internet version are the creations of Biografiakeskus, the Finnish Biography Centre, an organisation which produces biographical information and photographs.
