Each year FILI awards approximately EUR 700,000 in translation and printing grants to more than 300 different projects. Numerous forms of funding are available, including grants for the translation of Finnish literature into other languages and for translation into Finnish.

Are you a publisher a translator an event organiser an author?

Do you need a grant for a whole work a sample translation launch of a translation?

You can apply for a promotional grant for new or recently published translations of Finnish books abroad. Grants will be awarded only for the purpose of covering travel expenses incurred by Finnish authors attending promotional events or translation launches. > Read more

You can apply for a grant in order to produce a sample translation of a work of literature from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi directly into a foreign language. The original work must have been published in Finland. The aim of sample translation grants is to secure foreign publishers for works to be translated. > Read more

Do you need a grant for a work of fiction or non-fiction a comic or graphic novel a children’s picture book?

You can apply for a translation grant and a production grant for a comic book or graphic novel translated from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi directly into other languages.

You can apply for a translation grant for a work translated from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi directly into another language. The original work must have been published in Finland. The genres covered by these grants are prose, poetry, literature for children and young people and published drama scripts (i.e. with an ISBN). In the category of non-fiction, works of general non-fiction, essays and memoirs are eligible.

You can apply for a grant for translation of foreign fiction or non-fiction into Finnish. The aim of the Foreign Literature into Finnish programme is to promote the publication of non-commercial quality foreign literature in Finland.

You can apply for a grant for the translation into Swedish of Finnish fiction or non-fiction. These grants are available to publishers, societies and organisations who publish literature in Swedish in Finland.

You can apply for a printing grant to cover the costs of printing a Finland-Swedish works. These grants are available to publishers, societies and organisations who publish literature in Swedish in Finland.

You can apply for a grant for the translation of Finnish and Finland-Swedish literature directly into Nordic languages. The original work must have been published in Finland. The genres covered by these grants are prose, poetry, literature for children and young people, published drama scripts (i.e. with an ISBN), and comics and graphic novels. Non-fiction works dealing with Nordic culture are also eligible for grants. > Read more

Do you translate Finnish literature into other languages literature from another language into Finnish?

FILI does not offer grants directly to Finnish translators. Finnish publishers can apply for grants to support the translation of foreign and Sámi-language literature or non-fiction into Finnish.

You can apply for travel grants and sample translation grants. The other translation and printing grants FILI offers must be applied for by the publisher.

Applications for promotional grants may be submitted either solely by the foreign publisher/organisation organising the event, or in conjunction with a Finnish publisher. > Read more

FILI does not offer grants for authors directly. Publishers may apply for promotional grants for the purpose of covering travel expenses incurred by Finnish authors attending translation launches or promotional events.

Travel grants for authors are available from the Arts Council of Finland. Grants to cover working costs and other grants are available from various foundations and funds. > Other sources of funding
