Travel grants for translators

Translators from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi into other languages may apply to FILI for a travel grant for work-related travel. A travel grant may be awarded to a particular translator a maximum of once every two years.

Application periods

There are three application periods each year:

The first spring application round begins on 1 January and ends on 1 February. Only those applications arriving at FILI up to and including 1 February will be considered.

The second spring application round begins on 1 April and ends on 1 May. Only those applications arriving at FILI up to and including 1 May will be considered.

The autumn application round begins on 1 October and ends on 1 November. Only those applications arriving at FILI up to and including 1 November will be considered.

Applications must be submitted via the online-application form. The application form will be available on FILI’s website when each application round begins. After the last day of each application round, the form will be taken down and no more applications will be accepted.

Grants will not be awarded for travel that has already taken place.

Grant applicants

Translators from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi into other languages may apply to FILI for a travel grant for work-related travel. A travel grant may be awarded to a particular translator a maximum of once every two years.

Translators from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi into other languages, who live in Finland, may apply for a travel grant for work-related travel abroad.

Grant amounts

Translators can apply for travel grants to cover travel costs and reasonable expenses for accommodation and meals. Grants can be given for a maximum of 40 EUR per night and a maximum of 14 nights’ accommodation. Applicants can apply for a meal allowance of 20 EUR per day for a maximum of 14 days.

The recipient of a travel grant must submit a separate report about the trip to FILI as soon as possible after completion of the trip. No receipts for travel tickets or hotel accommodation need to be submitted with the report, but FILI may ask to see the receipts. In addition to the right of State aid authorities to audit projects awarded government funding as set out in Section 16 of the Act on Discretionary Government Transfers (688/2001), FILI reserves the right to ask the Funding Recipient to produce any required monitoring information pertaining to the use of government funding. The Funding Recipient must submit all information necessary for such monitoring, including reports, documents, records and other materials.

Terms and conditions for the awarding of grants

The purpose of the travel grants programme is to support translators making trips of importance to their translation projects and trips to improve their language and cultural knowledge, and to maintain contacts necessary for their translation work.

Applications must include a plan of work to be carried out during the trip, a realistic account of travel costs and an explanation of why the trip is necessary Applicants must have professional translation experience. Travel grants will not be awarded for language courses or travel to conferences.

Required attachments

Applications must be accompanied by an up-to-date version of the translator’s CV, which shows his/her translation experience, language ability and education.

Grant decisions

FILI’s advisory board will make the final decision on the travel grants awarded.

Grant decisions will be published on FILI’s website approximately two months after the end of the application period. All applicants will be informed of the publication of the grant decisions by email. A copy of the “Agreement on the awarding and use of funding and on the monitoring and conditions of its use” will be posted to successful applicants, as required under the Finnish government funding act. This contract must be signed by the applicant and returned to FILI.

Reasons for individual grant decisions will not be issued.

Payment and monitoring of travel grants

  • Travel grants will be paid into the translator’s bank account indicated on the application form approximately three months after the awarding date.
  • It is a precondition for payment that the recipient of the travel grant returns the signed “Contract on the awarding of grants and on the assessment and conditions of their use” to FILI as soon as possible, or no later than three months after the travel grants have been issued.
  • Successful travel grants are valid for 24 months after the awarding date.
  • The recipient must send a travel report to FILI (email ) as soon as possible after their trip, or no later than 24 months after the awarding date.

The recipient agrees to use the grant for the purpose for which it is intended. If the travel grant is not used according to these terms and conditions, it must be returned.

If the project is cancelled or substantially changed after the application has been processed or the grant has been paid, the recipient must inform FILI immediately (email )
