Sample Translation Grants

Translators and foreign and Finnish publishers can apply for a grant to produce a sample translation of a work of Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi literature. Up to 600 euros can be awarded for sample translations of around 20 pages.

Eligible genres are prose, poetry, and non-fiction, as well as children’s and young adult literature. Picture books are not eligible, however.

The application must include the Finnish publisher’s permission for the translation. Beginning translators are also requested to send a curriculum vitae and a written recommendation from a professional reference (for example an instructor or professional translator). If the translator is a Finn, an expert whose native language is the target language must be consulted throughout the translation process.

FILI retains the right to use sample translations for purposes such as foreign book fairs, meetings with publishers, and literary events.

Applications are reviewed once a month. Sample translation projects must be completed within 12 months after the grant is awarded.

Sample translation grants will be paid when FILI has received

  • A returned, signed copy of the required Finnish state subsidy contract

  • A copy of the completed sample translation

  • Personal and banking information

Applications for sample translation grants can be made using FILI’s online application form.
