Printing Grant Application Instructions

Finnish Children’s Picture Books into Other Languages

Applicants may request grants to support the printing of children's picture books which have been published in Finland and translated directly from Finnish, Swedish or Sámi into other languages. Grants are awarded to cover printing costs alone. Publication grants do not cover e.g. image processing expenses or graphic designer fees, nor do they cover royalties or shipping expenses.

Grants are not awarded for new editions of previously published translations.

The FILI advisory board decides on all funding allocation. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions in writing within two months after the end of the application period. Grant awards remain valid for 24 months.

When applying for grants to cover both translation and publication costs, two separate application forms must be filled out.

Grant applicants

All foreign publishers may apply for grants to cover printing expenses.

Application period

The annual deadlines for online grant applications are 1st April and 1st November each year. Applications and all relevant attachments must arrive at FILI by the final application deadline. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Required enclosures

  • An official, valid cost estimate from the printing house, which indicates printing costs for the desired print run and the price per unit in euros excluding royalties

  • a copy of the signed publication contract between the foreign publisher and the Finnish copyright owner

  • First-time applicants are also asked to include general information on the publishing house.

All attachments must arrive at FILI by the deadline.

Grant terms

Printing grants will be paid when the publisher has delivered one copy of the finished publication to FILI. Before grants can be paid, the recipient must also sign and return the contract sent out by FILI; this is a requirement of Finnish laws concerning state subsidies.

The published book must include mention of the grant awarded by FILI and FILI's logo.
