The library is located in the main building of SKS (Hallituskatu 1, Helsinki). Customer services are on the first floor, open collections and the quiet reading and working spaces are on the ground floor. Welcome!

Customer service and self-service on the first floor

Our customer service staff provides you with general advice concerning our services and collections. You can also resolve matters related to borrowing material with our staff.

The following self-service items are available on the service floor

  • self-service machine for checking out and returning library materials
  • a pickup shelf for material that is reserved or ordered from storage
  • a multipurpose machine for copying, printing and scanning material
  • a computer for searching for information and checking the location of material in the SKS Finna service.

On the new arrivals shelves you can find titles recently purchased for the library collections. The books are available for home loans.

Current issues of journals are located in a separate reading space. The latest issues cannot be checked out. You can browse e-journals using BrowZine, which is available in the same area, as well as on other terminals in the library.

Open collections and quiet working space on the ground floor

The majority of open collections are in the quiet library space on the ground floor.

The open collections include the literary research collection and the collection of research literature on culture. The collections contain material that can be borrowed, and reference books and bibliographies that are part of the reference library. You can check the locations of the works in the SKS Finna service and the Helka database.  The older material in both collections, as well as other literature in the field of humanities is in storage. You can access it by making a storage retrieval request. Read more about the library collections.

You can access electronic material using the library terminals or by logging in to the SKS wireless network with your own device. You can browse and read e-journals using BrowZine, which is available on all the computers in the library.

On the ground floor, there is a self-service machine for checking out or returning library materials, as well as computers and reading spaces for silent working. Read more about the reading and working spaces.
