Applications for sample translation grants are accepted on a rolling basis.

Applications are processed six times per year.

Applications are submitted via an online application form.

Grant applicants

Finnish and foreign publishers and literary agents, as well as literary translators, may apply for grants to create sample translations of texts from Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Samí into foreign languages. The source texts must have been published in Finland.

Translators may apply for a grant only if they have secured permission from the holder of the original rights to do a sample translation. Proof of permission does not need to be attached to the application. FILI may, however, ask to see proof of permission.

Grant amounts

The maximum amount awarded per translation is €500. The total amount of grants awarded annually for sample translations is approximately €20,000.

Terms and conditions for the awarding of grants

The purpose of the sample translation grant programme is to promote the translation and publication of Finnish literature abroad. The aim is to secure foreign publishers for works to be translated.

The quality of the literature and the expertise of the translator are particularly important factors in the assessment of applications.

The application must include justification of why a sample translation of the text is necessary, as well as plans for its use.

Conditions for the awarding of translation grants:

  • The translator has professional translation experience
  • The translator translates into his/her mother tongue (native language)
  • The work is translated directly from the original language in which it was published.

Genres

The genres covered by these grants are prose, poetry, literature for children and young people, published drama scripts (i.e. with an ISBN), and comics and graphic novels.

In the category of non-fiction texts, works of general non-fiction, essays and memoirs are eligible.

The following are not eligible for sample translation grants: scientific literature (scientific and academic publications, theses), reference works (e.g. dictionaries and manuals), guides and educational materials.

Required attachments

Applications must be accompanied by an up-to-date version of the translator’s CV which shows his/her translation experience, language ability and education.

The translator must have secured permission from the holder of the rights in the original work to do a sample translation. Proof of permission does not need to be attached to the application.

Grant decisions

All applicants will be informed of the publication of the grant decisions by email. A copy of the “Agreement on the awarding and use of funding and on the monitoring and conditions of its use” will be posted to successful applicants as required under the Finnish government funding act.

Payment and monitoring of sample translation grants

  • Sample translation grants will be paid into the bank account indicated on the application form after the applicant has submitted the completed sample translation in electronic format to FILI.
