SKS’ tips for teachers

SKS offers various opportunities to delve into the diverse Finnish cultural heritage and as well as produce cultural heritage yourself!

1. Use SKS learning materials in your teaching

Our open access learning materials have been prepared by researchers and educational professional and they account for the aims of the curriculum and comprehensive expertise. The learning materials contain versatile tasks, which are particularly suitable for teaching native language and literature, history and religion and worldview studies, as well as for various cross-disciplinary learning modules.

Explore all of SKS’s databases, catalogues, and directories in the ‘Aineistomme verkossa’, ‘Resources online’ section in Finnish.

2. Participate in collection campaigns with your students

Multiple campaings are always ongoing to which anyone can respond in their own language and style. Participation in the questionnaire can help you understand your role as a creator and shaper of cultural heritage as well as how archive materials are created. By participating in the questionnaire, you will leave a permanent mark! Minors wishing to record material to the archive must first seek consent from their legal guardians.

3. Bring your group to a workshop at SKS

In our archival pedagogy workshops, you will have the opportunity to learn about cultural heritage materials on the spot at SKS. At the workshops, children and young people are encouraged to interpret and produce cultural heritage. Workshops are available for people of all ages and on various themes.

SKS provides children and young people the opportunity to both interpret and produce cultural heritage.

Long continuum of SKS’ collaboration with schools

SKS has collaborated with teachers and schools for a long period of time. The collections of SKS’ archives have expanded since the 19th century thanks to active participation. Teachers have been strongly represented especially in the archive collection network founded in 1930. At the same time, materials were provided by students, who participated in folklore collecting as part of their school assignments. In addition, the collections have included the students’ own traditions from an early age.

We wanted to continue support teachers’ important roles in fostering cultural heritage by offering diverse materials, ideas and support. Development and cooperation are ongoing – you are welcome to join!
