Research field: art history

  • 19th-century Finnish art field, artists’ networks and epistolary culture
  • archival studies
  • exhibition studies
  • Finland and Italy: the cultural field and cultural relations in the 1920s and 1930s

I am an art historian working at the SKS in the consortium project “Constellations of Correspondence Large and Small Networks of Epistolary Exchange in the Grand Duchy of Finland” (CoCo), funded by the Research Council of Finland (https://coco.rahtiapp.fi/). The project collects and analyses metadata from 19th century letter collections of Finnish cultural heritage organisations in collaboration with the Aalto University and the University of Helsinki.

I received my PhD at the University of Helsinki in 2012 on art exhibitions in Finnish-Italian public art relations from the 1920s to the end of World War II (http://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-951-53-3437-4). Since then, I have continued to study art exhibitions in national, political and international contexts. In my research, archives play an essential role. I also have extensive experience at working with the archive collections at the Finnish National Gallery. I have edited various publications over the years and am a member of the editorial board of the 19th century section of the bilingual project FiKon – Nya perspektiv på Finlands konsthistoria (New perspectives on Finnish art history).

Currently, I study the domestic and transnational networks of Finnish women, artists and the art field in the 19th century and the history of art exhibitions. I am also interested in the collection histories of archival collections related to the visual arts.
