Organisation
The highest decision-making body of SKS is the annual meeting. The election committee makes a presentation to the annual meeting about the members to be elected to the delegation, which in turn elects the Board of SKS, which is responsible for SKS’s operations. The Board is assisted by various expert committees. The activities of SKS are directed by the Secretary General. SKS is divided into six sections, according to its tasks.
Archive
- an archive on oral and written culture which is open for everyone, which expands its collections on traditions and contemporary culture as well as literature and literary history and maintains their availability
- participates in joint archiving projects that develop the accessibility and availability of resources, for example
- guides researchers and other people seeking information in the use of its collections.
Library
- a library specialised in cultural studies and Finnish literary studies that is open to all, and which monitors the research and publication activities of its core fields and acquires and makes available datasets related to them
- maintains and develops the research and information services of these fields
- guides researchers and other people seeking information in the use of its collections.
Research Department
- coordinates SKS’ research activities
- prepares critical editions of Finnish literature and implements other multidisciplinary and long-term research projects
- creates scientific online publications learning environments based on topical research
- offers workspaces for researchers and research projects from the field the humanities
- actively operates in scientific networks.
SKS Scholarly Publishing
- publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed books in the fields of literature, cultural research, history and the Finnish language, both as printed books and as open access online publications
- publishes the National Biography of Finland and other personal history publications
- promotes the open availability of information and improves Finnish as a scientific language
- disseminate the results of Finnish humanistic research internationally
- produces interesting topics for the field of humanities as high-quality and well-researched open access-based online publications.
FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange
- FILI promotes and supports the internationalisation of Finnish, Fenno-Swedish and Sámi literature
- trains Finnish literature translators
- coordinates the support forms of various literary translations
- creates and promotes international publishing and literary field networks
- markets and conveys information on Finnish literature in international literary events
- arranges visits from experts for literary professionals and editors, for example.
Administration and Finance Department
- contributes to the realisation of the association’s aims in cooperation with the SKS’ trustees
- prepares statutory matters for the Board and Delegation and is responsible for the implementation and supervision of decisions
- manages the finances and property of the Society, contacts state aid authorities and plans the financial arrangements of activities
- is responsible for the Society’s personnel matters and support services
- is responsible for the Society’s communications and communicates with the members as well as SKS’ key domestic and foreign interest groups
- coordinates SKS’ development activities and cooperation between departments.
SKS Oppi and Tieto Oy*
SKS Oppi and Tieto Oy are a limited publishing company owned by the Finnish Literary Society, whose main business is the publishing of printed and digital books, learning materials and other publications. The company name is SKS Kirjat.

Trust bodies and administration
Trust bodies play an important role in SKS’ activities. The trust bodies and Secretary General decide on SKS’ matters. SKS’ Trustee Organisation is formed of the annual meeting, Delegation, Board, election committee and advisory boards. Annual meeting
The annual meeting is a meeting between SKS’ members. The election committee is selected in the annual meeting and makes a presentation to the annual meeting about the members to be elected to the delegation. The SKS’ annual meeting is usually held on 16 March, unless it falls on the weekend.
Delegation
The Delegation includes 21 representatives that represent the key fields of research, culture, literature, the Finnish language and historical research of SKS. The Delegation elects the Board and supervises its activity. The delegation convenes twice a year.
Board
The activities of SKS are managed by a Board of nine members. The Board elects the advisory boards of SKS. In addition, the Board elects the publication, financial, research, archiving and library committees to prepare their corresponding matters.
Secretary General
The Secretary General manages the operations of SKS and prepares the matters to be presented to the Board. The Secretary General is assisted by the Board of Directors. Its assembly is decided by the Board at the proposal of the Secretary General.
