Research at the Finnish Literature Society
Research at the Finnish Literature Society is focused on studying Finland, Finnish language, Finnishness and Finnish cultures both in their particular content and in their transnational connections.
Our aim is to foster a critical self-understanding of Finnishness and to see Finnish cultural heritage and its research as part of world cultures. Research in the humanities is bound to time and place, which in our case is defined as a geographical, historical, cultural and linguistic construction of “Finland”. We study humanity and human culture in this specific context.
New research openings at SKS include, for example, critical archival studies, quantitative digital research on oral poetry and textual scholarship on writing.
The Research Department of the Finnish Literature Society was established in 2009 and is a multidisciplinary research centre in the humanities. Currently, the researchers at the department represent the fields of artistic research, art history, church history, Finnish language, folklore studies, history, literature studies, museology, religion studies, sociology and theatre studies. SKS is a home for several research projects and it supports research cooperation and networks both nationally and internationally. The Research Department is located in Helsinki on the 3rd floor of the Finnish House of Nobility, adjacent to the SKS Main Building.
Research activities at SKS include a multidisciplinary research seminar and an annual call to work at the Research Department as a non-salaried research fellow (links only in Finnish). Furthermore, SKS awards grants for research in the humanities.
